Construction of the Dam:

In the early 1900’s it became apparent the mighty White River was a river that would need to be contained. With record-breaking flooding, development along the White rivers banks was out of the question. However, President Franklin D. Roosevelt put in place the Flood Control Act of 1938. This act allowed for the construction of Bull Shoals Dam along with six others along the White rivers and its many other tributaries. By the end of construction in 1951, Bull Shoals Dam was the 5th largest dam in the world. The dam stands 256 feet and is 2,256 feet in length. Bull Shoals Dam boasts a whopping 8 generators that produce nearly 900,000,000 kWh per year.

Benefits of the Dam:

When constructions wrapped up and water levels became regulated people began to settle around the White River. The cool water running off the bottom of Bull Shoals lake also created the perfect habitat for many different species of trout. With the help of Arkansas Fish and Game, the section of White River below Bull Shoals Dam has become the mecca of trout fishing in America. A sportsman who is looking to knock a few different trout species off their bucket list can easily do so on a weekend trip to the White River. You can expect to catch Rainbow trout, Brown trout, Cutthroat trout and if you are lucky, even a Golden trout!
